Narrow band saw blades

35mm – 75mm Multiple grades

Stocked per-metre and in pre-cut loop lengths to suit common portable and fixed-bed sawmill configurations. Pitch and loop length both matter, confirm both against your machine's specification before ordering.

M-Gold
Hard grade

M-Gold is a harder-tempered grade for abrasive or high-production work where edge hardness matters more than flex. Well suited to harder hardwoods and high-throughput operations. A different trade-off to Gold, not simply "better". Choose based on application, not as an automatic upgrade.

Silver & Standard
All-round

Reliable general-purpose grade. Popular with mills that sharpen frequently and want a cost-effective, predictable blade. A solid choice for most Southern African softwood sawmilling operations.

Non-listed loop lengths can be welded from per-metre coil. Contact us with your wheel centre distance to confirm. Grade availability varies by width and changes with stock, call to confirm which grades are currently available for your required width and length.

Which grade should I choose?

Gold is our top all-round grade. Best edge retention and fatigue life across most timber types, the right default for high-production sawmilling. Bimetal is the choice when metal inclusions are a risk. M-Gold (Double Hard equivalent) trades some flex for extra edge hardness, suited to abrasive or very hard timber where that trade-off pays off, but it isn't a straight upgrade from Gold. Silver is the dependable general-purpose grade for mills that sharpen often and want predictable, economical performance. If unsure, call us and describe your timber type and production volume and we'll advise.

Wide band saw blades

80mm – 311mm Böhler & Uddeholm

For industrial headrig bandsaw mills, the large-capacity primary breakdown sawbands used in commercial sawmills processing high volumes of green log. Supplied in coil and welded to the correct loop length for your wheel centre distance.

Specify wheel centre distance when ordering. Wide band blades are supplied from coil and welded to length. The correct loop length is calculated from your machine's wheel centre distance. Measure centre-to-centre between the two wheels, or supply the current blade's loop length from the manufacturer's specification plate.

Böhler-Uddeholm high-tensile alloy steel — the industry standard for large-capacity headrig bandsaw mills
Heavier gauges (1.47–1.83mm) for larger wheel diameters and harder, more abrasive timber
Lighter gauges (1.1–1.25mm) reduce kerf loss and suit softwood on smaller-diameter wheels
Pitch must match your wheel and feed speed. Coarser pitches (25P, 38P) for soft green timber, finer pitches (45P, 50P) for harder, drier wood
Sharpening and re-tensioning available in our Nelspruit workshop.

Pitch must be confirmed against your machine's wheel diameter and feed speed before ordering. The wrong pitch causes poor chip clearance and premature blade failure.

Frame saw blades

175mm – 180mm Uddeholm & Böhler

Frame saw blades for multi-blade gang conversion of logs into boards in a single pass. Frame saw operation requires specialist tensioning and setting equipment and expertise, correct set symmetry is critical for straight cutting. We offer sharpening and re-tensioning in our Nelspruit workshop.

Custom frame saw blades available. Running a frame saw outside the 175–180mm range, or with a non-standard gauge or set pattern? We manufacture and source frame saw blades to your specification. Provide width, gauge, set type and length and we'll quote.

Armstrong swagers — frame & band saw setting

A swage sets the tooth by spreading and shaping the tip, widening the kerf so the blade clears the cut without binding. Correct, even swaging across every tooth is what keeps a frame or band saw cutting straight; uneven swage is one of the most common causes of a saw that wanders or leaves a wavy face.

We stock the Armstrong No.8G swager for carbide frame saw blades and the No.5700-G shaper that pairs with it, both available as standalone tools or as part of an on-site service kit. Hand-operated and air-driven swagers for narrow and wide band saws are also available — see our Armstrong sawshop range for the full line and part numbers.

Full illustrated parts lists are available for all Armstrong swagers and shapers we supply. Ask us for the relevant parts list when ordering spares, dies or replacement anvils.

Common questions

Frequentlyasked

What's the difference between Gold, M-Gold and Silver grades?
Gold is our top all-round grade, strong edge retention and fatigue resistance across most timber types, and the right default for high-production sawmilling. M-Gold is a harder-tempered grade (equivalent to a "Double Hard" specification) that trades some flex for extra edge hardness. It suits abrasive or very hard timber, but it isn't simply better than Gold, it's a different trade-off for a different application. Silver is a reliable general-purpose grade popular with mills that sharpen frequently. For most Southern African softwood operations, Gold or Silver is the right choice. For very hard or abrasive timber where edge hardness is the priority, M-Gold is worth considering. For timber with metal inclusion risk, Bimetal is the better choice over either.
Do you stock blades compatible with popular portable sawmill brands?
Yes. We stock narrow band blades in the loop lengths used by the most common portable sawmill brands, plus per-metre coil that can be welded to any length. Compatible guide rollers and CBN sharpening wheels are also stocked. Tell us your machine model and we'll confirm the correct loop length, width and pitch.
How do I know if my blade needs tensioning rather than just sharpening?
Signs of incorrect tension: the cut drifts or curves in plan view; the blade tracks to one side of the wheel; the cut surface is wavy or undulating end-on; or you can see visible blade body deflection during cutting. Sharpening will not fix a tensioning problem. An Armstrong-Simonds digital tension gauge gives a definitive reading. Guessing by thumb pressure is not reliable for production work.
How many times can a narrow band blade be sharpened?
Typically 5–10 sharpenings before the gullet depth becomes too shallow for effective chip clearance. The exact number depends on how aggressively each sharpening removes material, the timber hardness, and whether the blade has been run to the point of extreme dullness (which requires more material removal per cycle).
Can you weld a blade to a non-standard length?
Yes, we can weld narrow and wide band blades from coil to any length. Provide your wheel centre distance (measured centre-to-centre between the two wheels) or your current blade's loop length, and we'll weld and supply the correct loop. For narrow band, we can usually supply from stock if the loop length matches a common portable sawmill dimension.
